5 Things You Might Not Know About jQuery

David Flanagan has written a post a post at O’Reilly titled ’5 Things You Might Not Know about jQuery’. As the name suggests, the post discusses 5 tips, tricks and shortcuts about jQuery. If you taught yourself jQuery by referencing the API, then these tips are probably useful. However if you read a book to learn jQuery, chances are these tips would have been covered in that.

Serverside JS Tools

Addy Osmani has written an article about different libraries that can be used when developing NodeJS applications. If you are new to the NodeJS community I recommend you read this article. Osmani covers:

FuelPHP

FuelPHP is a new PHP framework which aims to be light, fast and full featured. It is primarily based on the Kohana Framework but draws inspiration from Code Igniter. Fuel comes with it’s own ActiveRecord implementation as well as support for database migrations. The core library is fully namespaced (for some reason the application you create doesn’t use namespaces) and requires PHP 5.3.2+. The developers of Fuel plan to have database support out of the box for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB and CouchDB.

How I Work is a new website that allows people to share their development environments, tools and tips via video with other developers. So far the majority of videos are about Ruby on Rails but there are some great videos about Textmate, Vim and the Console.

App Engine High Availability Datastore

The High Replication Datastore provides the highest level of availability for your reads and writes, at the cost of increased latency for writes and changes in consistency guarantees in the API. The High Replication Datastore increases the number of data centers that maintain replicas of your data by using the Paxos algorithm to synchronize that data across datacenters in real time. One of the most significant benefits is that all functionality of your application will remain fully available during planned maintenance periods, as well as during most unplanned infrastructure issues. – source

At the cost of 3 times the amount you pay for the current master/slave datastore it would appear your data will sync faster across all data centers and be available during “downtimes”. Any expansion of the GAE platform is good news, however many people are still waiting for SQL and domain SSL support.
